Ian Ross is a 17-year-old senior at Sonoma Academy. Ever since he was five years old, he has been playing and enjoying the sport of soccer. He is currently going on his third year playing for SA on the Varsity Boys soccer team as a left-back. Even though he did not have the opportunity to play soccer for Sonoma Academy during his freshman year due to COVID-19, he exclaims he would have jumped at the chance to do so.
Currently, the SA Varsity Boys soccer team is first in the North Central II league. The team is led by head coach Roy Vega, assistant coach Fin Vega, and Cruz Escutia, who is an assistant coach as well.
Other than the coaches, Ross is also a leader figure on the Varsity Boys soccer team. He, along with Julian Mahrer (‘24), Logan Castro (‘24), Charlie De Alessi (‘24), and Kellen Kramer (‘25), is a team captain.
Over the course of this season, Ross recalls one of his favorite moments being when he and his teammates beat The College Preparatory School, after losing to them in the finals of the 2022-2023 season playoffs. One of his most memorable games this season was in a match against Credo High School where he had gotten three assists. One of Ross’ favorite memories from this season was when his teammate Peter Chen (‘24) scored against Tomales High School.
Since Ian Ross has been playing soccer for a total of 11 years, he has gained an abundance of knowledge on and off the field. To his fellow teammates and student athletes, Ross advises, “If you keep working hard, your time will come.” One goal he has set for himself is to score a goal this season, and a goal he has set for his team is to win NCS.
Sonoma Academy’s Varsity Boys soccer team has their next game on October 25, 2023. Come support Ian Ross and his teammates on Chris Ziemer field at 4:30 pm as they face off against Roseland Collegiate Prep and work their way towards becoming NCS champions.
