Longing sat and waited by the window, watching as the night sky split into day. The stars were still twinkling. He sent a glare to Apathy as she carelessly trampled over the blooming flowers. He yearned for the moon to come back, but he would have to wait another day. Drowsily, he slipped into his twin bed. The sheets covered his face as he dozed off into a dream. Still fast asleep, he dreamed about the glistening moon, watching as it danced in the dark sky. No matter what, it was out of reach for the always sad Longing.
Alarmed, Longing woke up from his favorite dream to find his phone blaring the same ringtone over and over. He answered the call, and his best friend Envy picked up on the other side. In a hushed voice, Envy asked if she could come visit his quaint little house. Envy always liked visiting his house in the small suburban neighborhood.
Once Envy arrived, she gazed at the house as if it were covered in glitter, sparkling like the moon. The thought of the moon brought Longing back to reality just in time, because Envy had already rushed to her favorite spot in his house. The backyard. It only consisted of some chairs, tables, and a small pool. Longing did not know why she loved this spot so much, but maybe it was because she did not have a backyard of her own.
Envy and Longing looked down into the pool water. His brunette hair and blue eyes glistened back at him. Just as they were about to hop into the shallow pool, Envy got a phone call from her mother, Loneliness, who told her she had to leave. Disappointed, Envy dragged her feet back out the front door and took off down the road.
Now all alone, Longing went back inside and picked up a book, trying to pass the time while waiting for the sun to set. Longing dozed off again, making that his second nap of the day. This time, he was woken up by moonlight spilling through cracks in the windows and pooling on the floor.
Longing hurriedly jumped out of bed and rushed to the window seat. This was where Longing sat most of the time, waiting for the moon to come back to him. He held onto his blanket tightly and watched as the moon inched across the sky. His only desire was to sit up there on the moon and watch as the Earth spun below him.
His eyes grew red and burned, but Longing was too scared to blink, afraid the moon would leave without a goodbye. When he finally blinked, he opened his swollen eyes just in time to see the moon dip below the horizon, allowing the sun to take its place. He sat there all alone, knowing he would have to wait another full day to try to reach the moon.
